Let freedom ring...
For most, freedom and independence are represented by the flag below. One quick look at it and you know what it stands for---you can't help but be filled with thankfulness to the number of people who have sacrificed more than I can imagine so that I can have weekends like this with my family. To our very own Papa Ocean, thank you for choosing the path you did and for the commitments made to our country.
For others, freedom and independence are represented by taking your first steps. Yep, Burns decided to take his first (SIX) steps this weekend. It went like this---Bobby, Hadley and I were laying on the ground on Friday evening playing. Burns stood up without pulling up on a thing and took six steps across his room. We all laughed really loud in a mixture of shock and pride. A big cheer for Burns...and then he sat. And continued to sit as we tried to encourage him to do it again. Chalk it up, another witty "I'll do it on my time" child of ours. Funny how freedom for one can be a scary thought for another, but nonetheless we are excited for this next stage of exploration.
It was a filled-to-the-brim weekend and ironically equally as relaxing --- I think a large part of that was me being freed from the feeling I have to to be on a schedule. I tend to plan out our weekends before they even start. I truly enjoy doing projects, getting things crossed off the list and going and going 'till the sunsets. Some of this is good, but I have realized that in all of the quantity, I miss out on the quality of the people I am doing all of the quantity for in the first place. My intentions are well meant, but I rob others (and probably myself the most) the enjoyment of what I am doing in that moment.
This weekend, Bobby and I had a blast together --- like we were back in our dating days. Laughed, flirted, danced to old school rap and enjoyed each other's company a lot. We worked out on the beach, we worked hard on our backyard makeover, we golfed as a family for the first time, we ate BLTs everyday, we biked, we enjoyed the pool, we built shelves for a toy kitchen, we baked cookies...I feel silly for saying this, but we felt the freedom of being ourselves and it felt great. 
And the message on Sunday --- go here to listen. The ultimate freedom that comes from Christ alone. We all have things that "inform our view of our world/life." Fill in the blank -- if only I had this or if this didn't happen to me or if I wasn't born with this, then....
But that is not what God intends for us. Our identity comes from Him---what freedom.
